"My Aegean Portal" @ the Bridge Residency, Los Angeles, CA
The outdoors installation made at the Bridge Residency in Los Angeles, CA, occupies an area of a former basketball court. It consists of a seaweed sculpture, oriented in between West and East, and a map drawn with graphite on cement floor. Seaweed and seagrass were found at the beach of Santa Monica - sadly full of tar, which I cleaned. Little parts were left, as a reminder of the unforgivable contamination of the oceans. The map on the cement has utilized existing lines that indicated the routes of the sun (by painter Alison Woods), and was drawn by tracing the shadows cast by the trees throughout the day, and from the Aegean Islands, taken from my father's nautical maps. Numbers around the shadow forms show the exact time I drew them, and numbers around the Aegean Islands suggest the depths around them.
Marking Here and There, feeling the ground I am stepping on and the depths of the sea I am coming from.
With gratitude to Alison Woods, her husband Paul and their dog Simon.
