"You are the result of the love of thousands" Linda Hogan (Chickasaw) @Chandra Cerrito Contemporary, Oakland, CA
A site-specific installation during my summer residency at Chandra Cerrito Contemporary in Oakland, CA:
“Walking, I am listening to a deeper way. Suddenly all my ancestors are behind me. Be still, they say. Watch and listen. You are the result of the love of thousands”. Words from Linda Hogan (Chickasaw) reminding us where we are standing and where we come from.
During the month of July, people from the Bay Area and around the world participated into my project sharing with me:
-where they come from, or any place they feel more connected,
-poets/poems/writers from those locales (or from around the world) that have touched them.
All the above were transformed into a drawing, a loose map, taking over the front gallery of Chandra Cerrito Contemporary. After a month research, coordinates of the given places along with poems or quotes from the given authors were written on the walls. Numbers, letters, lines, and dots created a universe alongside with hanging sculptures which physically manifested the connections between places and people as diverse materials gathered from around the world were used.
"You are the result of the love of thousands" was part of the Peripheral Visions, an artist/curator-in-residence program at Chandra Cerrito Contemporary in Oakland’s art and maker district. In a time of political, economic, and cultural polarization on a national and regional scale, art can prompt genuine communication, empathy, and insight required for a harmonious future.
Special thanks to all jurors and Chandra Cerrito who selected me to be the 2018 Summer Artist-In-Residence for the Peripheral Visions Program: Kevin Chen (curator), Justin Hoover (curator), Ashara Ekundayo (curator and Director of Ashara Ekundayo Gallery), Guillermo Galindo (artist), Eric Murphy (curator at Joyce Gordon Gallery), Mayumi Hamanaka (curator at Kala Art Institute), and Donna Napper (Art Consultant, curator).
