Remember: you are not leaving, you are going! (2025)
Text by Kostas Prapoglou.
Photograph printed on canvas, natural and copper-plated plants and sea grass (Posidonia Oceanica and Zostera marina), embroidered and knitted seagrass from the Pacific Ocean (Zostera marina), fabric, found beach trash (plastic threads and nautical ropes), cotton threads, feathers, copper from cables, ink on marble, metallic bases, fans, dimensions variable.
Dimitra Skandali's site-specific installation Remember: You are not leaving, you are going! (2025), summons a psychic depth, a realm where embodied anamnesis materialises. Nature becomes the vessel for human subjectivity. Dried marine seagrass from the Pacific Ocean (Zostera marina), withered blossoms, and copper-plated remnants of organic matter are all suspended within a pulsing field, where desire is registered as a vibration and as a shadow of silent navigation. Skandali's maps unfold as recordings of the implicit need for self-redefinition. The marble acts as a surface where memory deposits itself like sediment of oblivion, slowly emerging from the earth’s interior. Deconstructed, the poetry appears as an echo from the pre-linguistic matrix of the abyss of the mind, a vital rhythm of mental yearning before meaning is articulated. The forms, weightless, resist gravitational laws. The gaze drifts to recall what has not yet been experienced. The female figure submerging in the photograph is vision’s own desire folding upon itself; it is the viewer in a state of descent towards the inner sanctum of the unconscious. The installation constitutes an intrapsychic archipelago. Each element, plant, metal or word, stimulates a dimension of inward displacement. Within a distorted phase, the hybrid figuration and the metaphysics of the vegetal are braided together in a connection of interdependence. Skandali's environment delivers inner solace. And within the vacancy of waiting, where the non-event is expressed as the initial ripple of being, the psyche finds the means to expand, to flow, to exist unconstrained.
